I've been a huge fan of The Dixie Chicks forever, so when I had the opportunity to get a copy of the new CD from The Court Yard Hounds to review, I was thrilled! Martie Maquire and Emily Robison have truly spread their wings with Amelita. I can't seem to stop playing this CD! It's amazing.
How did the Court Yard Hounds evolve?
- After a few years away from the limelight and the Dixie Chicks, the two sisters were ready to get back into the studio with the creation of Court Yard Hounds. Amelita, out now, marks the Court Yard Hounds' second album.
- "I love this band...the way we explore new aspects of ourselves and what we can expect from each other, both musically and as people," says Martie. "We are close. Plus, being on the road and being in the studio is like my spa from the everyday challenges of just being a mom.”
- The Court Yard Hounds’ new album is a clear statement of who the girls are as artists, defining their sound as a band, with soaring songs that are personal, yet familiar and widely relatable.
I'll be honest. I expected it to have a more bluegrass/traditional country sound to it because I know Martie & Emily have a strong bluegrass background, but surprisingly, the album is a nice blend of country/pop. Some songs like "Sunshine" definitely lean more towards pop, while songs like "Phoebe" and "Gets You Down" definitely have a more country feel. I think fans of both genres would enjoy this CD. Obviously, their sound has evolved with the changes in their lives.
As I listen to this album over and over, I'm having trouble finding a song I don't really like. I like them all, but of course some more than others. Some of the lyrics are hard to get out of your head, like "Sunshine," the first track on the CD. It's a catchy tune with catchy lyrics that stay with you. And, of course, we've all known a few "Sunshines" in our own lives!
I can't wait to see what The Court Yard Hounds do next!
You can preview and buy your own copy from Amazon or iTunes and I strongly suggest you do it! I don't think you'll be sorry.
