I've been on a quest for the perfect pillow for many years. I've tried just about every kind of pillow there is. I've tried feather pillows(even though I'm allergic,) latex pillows, down alternative--just about every type of pillow has been under my head at some point. Still, I couldn't find the perfect one. I've tried the cheap ones from Walmart, a bit more expensive ones from Macy's and the last time we stayed at a Hilton Hotel, I looked at the name and style on the pillow and ordered those! I have to admit, those pillows, which came from Pacific Pillows were the best I'd tried until recently.
About a month or so ago, Select Comfort, the same folks who make the Sleep Number beds, gave me the opportunity to try out one of their pillows.
The pillow process was started with an interview with my Sleep Consultant, Sarah, but you can easily design your own pillow online. She asked me several questions about my sleeping habits and we went from there. I'm allergic to feathers and down, so we immediately crossed those materials off the list for my pillow. I explained to Sarah that I'd been using two pillows lately because my old pillows were getting flat and I needed a little support. I also sleep on my side(at least I start out that way.) Sarah explained to me that sleeping on the side without neck support can cause backaches. That certainly made sense to me because lately, I'd been waking up with a horrible backache and was blaming it on our bed.
After a few more questions, Sarah and I came up with what we thought was the perfect pillow design for me. Select Comfort Sleep Number pillows come in three parts. We went with the down alternative outer shell with a memory foam contour shape core. For the cover, we chose the In Balance pillow protector. Not only is it hypoallergenic, but it's also temperature balancing and will hopefully help me sleep more comfortably at night--especially during the summer months.
My pillow arrived right on schedule and I immediately assembled it. I have to admit, I found that part kind of fun! I slept on it that night and agree that one pillow is now enough for me. I also haven't awakened with that backache that had been plaguing me either. After almost a week of use, I think that I very well may have found the perfect pillow! I think I'm sleeping better because the pillow gives me support where I need it and is keeping it's shape.
The only negative thing is that my memory foam core smelled a bit the first night I slept on it. The next day, I read the instructions and noticed it said to air it out for 7 hours or so before use to keep the smell down, so that was my own fault. I haven't noticed the smell since and I've been sleeping very well.
According to the information that came with mine, these pillows can last up to 10 years with proper care, so while they may seem expensive, think about how much you spend(or at least think how much I have spent) over that same period of time. I'm sure if you look at it that way, you'll realize it's a savings. Another great thing about these pillows is that you don't have to replace the whole pillow. If you need to replace a portion of the pillow, you can go online or call them up and order a new core or a new outer shell.
If you've never checked them out, head on over to SelectComfort.com. You can see how to design your own pillow online or you can call them up. There's also an offer on their home page to get a coupon for $50 off your purchase of $100 or more. You can use that towards a pillow purchase, too!
